Researchers from Central Asia and the Eastern Partnership present Health and Climate Change issues at ASEAN-EU STI Days 2015

The ASEAN-EU Science, Technology and Innovation Days 2015 took place in Paris, France from 17-19 March under the overarching theme 'Excellent science in ASEAN'. The 2nd edition of this forum-like event attracted a wide range of stakeholders engaged in international science cooperation, scientific research or innovation. The Eastern Partnership and Central Asian countries were in the focus of two well visited side-events.

The main objective of these events was to inform EU researchers about the research landscape in EaP and CA countries, to build up networks among the various regions, participating in the STI days and last but not least to build up new contacts and possible consortia for Horizon 2020 calls. This last objective was supported by several bilateral matchmaking talks organised by Euresearch, Switzerland as a part of the three-day event. On the basis of the feedback forms filled in by the participants of the side-event, scientists highly appreciated both the content of the STI Days and networking possibilities during the conference.

Health Research

The side-event was focusing on non-infectious lung diseases and infectious diseases in the EaP/CA countries. Smoking and related lung infections seem to be one of the main causes of death in both regions with the worst statistics around the whole world. It was highlighted by several speakers that this hot-topic might be handled via regional cooperation more successfully.

High-level speakers from all Central Asian countries took part in this event: Almaz Aldashev from the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, Khuseyn Egamnazarov from the Avicenna Tajik State Medical University, Garahanjar Narlyyev from the Scientific Consultancy Centre 'Altyn Umyt' in Turkmenistan, Shukhrat Yusupov from the Samarkand State Medical Institute in Uzbekistan, and Yeraliyeva Lyazzat from Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University.

The Eastern Partnership region was represented by five excellent researchers: Lyudmila Niazyan from the Institute of Epidemiology, Virology and medical Parasotology in Armenia, Arif A. Mekhtiev from A.I.Karaev Institute of Physiology in Azerbaijan, Volha Kardash from Republican unitary enterprise 'Scientific practical centre of hygiene' in Belarus, Tamaz Maglaklelidze from the The Black Sea Health Alliance in Georgia, as well as Doina Rusu from the State Medical and Pharmaceutical University of Moldova.

All presentations will be uploaded to the related STI Days website, where you already find photos and information about the speakers.

Climate Change and Water Management

The side-event was focusing on potential impacts of Climate Change on Water management, sustainable use of water resources in the EaP/CA countries. Drought, floods, melting of glaciers seem to be the main disadvantages of Climate Change. The transport of oil and gas in the Caspian and Black-Sea Region causes significant environmental problems. It was highlighted by several speakers that these hot-topics might be handled via international cooperation more successfully.

The Central Asia region was represented by four excellent researchers: Rysbek Satylkanov from the Tien-Shan High Mountain Research Center under the Institute of Water Problems and Hydro Power, Kyrgyzstan, Inom Normatov from Tajik National University, Zainalobudin Kobuliev from Institute of water problems, hydropower and ecology, Academy of sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan, and Zafar Gafurov from the International Water Management Institute (IWMI – Central Asia office), Uzbekistan.

The high-level speakers from the Eastern Partnership countries were: Gabrielyan Bardukh from the Center of Zoology and Hydroecology, Armenia; Islam Mustafayev from the Institution of Radiation Problems of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences; Aliaksandr Pakhomau from the Central Research Institute for Complex Use of Water Resources, Belarus; Vladimir Elisashvilif from the Central Research Institute for Complex Use of Water Resources, Georgia; Igor Serotila from Academy of Sciences of Moldova; Sergiy Snizhko from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine; and Valentina Yanko from the Odessa I.I.Mechnikov National University, Ukraine.

All presentations will be uploaded to the related STI Days website, where you already find photos and information about the speakers.
