Horizon 2020 Association Conference and Training Seminar in Yerevan
The IncoNet EaP project organised a Horizon 2020 Association Conference and Training Seminar devoted to Armenia's association to Horizon 2020, the EU's current Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The events were held in Yerevan on 10-11 November 2016. The main objective was to present the additional opportunities arising from Armenia's association to Horizon 2020 to the Armenian authorities, policy makers and STI stakeholders. About 140 participants attended the events.

On 8 November 2016, a training titled ‘How to prepare a Horizon 2020 proposal’ took place at Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation Conference Hall. The training agenda included presentations e.g. on widening the participation instruments and developing a project idea into a proposal. ERC Conference 'Frontier Research and Science Diplomacy'
Science diplomacy is a recently emerging term in the EU context and at the broader international level. While the increased interest in the subject is relatively new, the concept itself is not. First ever EU-Eastern Partnership Ministerial Meeting dedicated to Environment and Climate Action
The first ever Eastern Partnership (EaP) formal ministerial meeting on environment and climate change took place in Luxembourg on 18 October 2016 with the participation of Commissioners Karmenu Vella and Johannes Hahn. The EU and the Eastern Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine) adopted a Ministerial Declaration, confirming their joint commitment to stepping up cooperation on environmental challenges and climate change, and promoting sustainable and inclusive economic development.

Georgian-German Day of Science
Georgia is an important partner for Germany in the Eastern Partnership region. The science and technology cooperation between both counties started in the early 1990s, when Germany was the first country in the European Community to recognise Georgia under international law after it gained independence. On 19 September 2016, a 'Georgian-German Day of Science' in Tbilisi brought together research funding organisations, higher education and scientific institutions as well as individual researchers to present their joint success stories and discuss opportunities for future Georgian-German STI cooperation.

Webinar: Coordinators share their views about IncoNet EaP/CA Twinning Grants
The IncoNet EaP and IncoNet CA projects jointly organised two calls for twinning grants. A third call – targeting the Eastern Partnership region – has been pre-announced for September 2016. The main objective of the twinning instrument is to increase the participation of Eastern Partnership and Central Asian countries in EU calls. In order to evaluate the effectiveness and usefulness of this funding instrument, the DLR Project Management Agency organised a short webinar session with coordinators of projects supported by the twinning grants on 27 July 2016.

Memorandum of Understanding signed at Eastern Partnership STI Evaluation Platform Meeting
In the framework of the EU funded IncoNet EaP project, the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation hosted an international workshop of the 'Eastern Partnership Science, Technology and Innovation Evaluation Platform' in Tbilisi, Georgia on 27-28 June 2016. The IncoNet EaP project had started preparations for a Memorandum of Understanding among the active research funding agencies and research commitees in the EaP countries in 2014. Two previous workshops led up to the current event, which aimed to progress the drafted documents and to find ways to establish an active network functioning beyond the existence of IncoNet EaP.

The first BRICS Conference on Photonics was opened on 30 May 2016 at Skoltech, the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology. On 17 March 2016 a high-level conference on energy cooperation with the countries in the Eastern Neighbourhood and Central Asia marked the end of the EU-funded Energy Cooperation Programme INOGATE that lasted for 20 years. On this occasion the European Commission confirmed that energy remains the EU’s priority for future relations with these countries. A new EU regional energy cooperation programme is expected to start in May 2016, according to Maroš Šefčovič, European Commission Vice President of the Energy Union.

Results of Policy Mix Peer Review presented in Georgia
The IncoNet EaP organised two so called 'Policy Mix Peer Reviews', one in Armenia and a second in Georgia. S&T policy mix peer reviews serve to assess the science system of a certain country, with the support of international experts (peers). EU-Central Asia Policy Stakeholders Conference 'EU-Central Asia Cooperation in addressing Energy Research & Innovation'
This was the 2nd Policy Stakeholders Conference (PSC) organised by the IncoNet CA project and the 4th in a series of events targeting Central Asia,which was started by its predecessor project IncoNet CA/SC. This year's focus was on 'energy', a topic high on the political agenda of both the European Union and Central Asia. The PSC took place on 30 Sep - 1 Oct 2015 in Astana, a workshop on 'EU-Kazakhstan Innovation Cooperation' on 2 Oct was also open to the PSC participants.

The European Researchers' Night celebrated its 10th anniversary this year in 280 cities all over Europe and beyond. In Moldova Researchers Night 2015 took place on the square of the Academy of Sciences in Chisinau. The inclusive format of the event represents a new approach to the interaction between the research sector and the public. During the event the visitors had the chance to discover the world of science and meet the people behind labs and scientific experiments.

The 'Horizon 2020 Week – 2015' was held in Minsk on 21-25 September 2015. It presented opportunities for Belarusian research organisations and businesses to participate in the Horizon 2020 calls for proposals 2016-2107. For Belarus, the start of Horizon 2020 has been quite promising: upon the results of the first year, 11 projects with national participants have already brought around 1,5 mln EUR. However, having almost 20 thousand researchers, Belarus has a much higher capacity.

The experts' visit took place in Tashkent on 19-20 June 2015 in the frame of the IncoNet CA project. On 19 June the experts visited the Physical-Technical Institute SPA 'Physics Sun' of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences. SPA 'Physics-Sun' is a leading organisation for conducting basic and applied research in the field of solar energy. The Test Bed (Geliopoligon) of the Physical-Technical Institute of SPA 'Physics-Sun' is the main base of the testing site, where scientific-research, and pilot development works are being performed.

EU-Central Asia STI Policy Stakeholders' Conference on Climate Change
The Policy Stakeholder Conference on 'EU-CA STI Cooperation in addressing Climate Change', hosted by the Parliament of the Kyrgyz Republic and the National Library of Kyrgyzstan, was successfully held in Bishkek on 23-24 September 2014. It was the first in a series of policy dialogue activities organised under the IncoNet CA project. More than 120 stakeholders attended the conference with speakers from five Central Asian countries, several EU Member States and international and regional organisations.

Developing Cooperation between Russian and European Technology Platforms
Technology platforms, which allow participants to allocate resources more sensibly and efficiently, are a relatively new STI policy tool. They were originally designed in the early 2000s in Europe and then, following their successful application, adopted in Russia. On 20 May 2014 prospects for cooperation between Russian and European technology platforms were discussed in a workshop at the Higher School of Economics under the aegis of the EU-Russia Year of Science 2014 in the framework of the BILAT-RUS Advanced project.

EU-Eastern Partnership STI Policy Stakeholders' Conference addressing Climate Change
The first IncoNet EaP Policy Stakeholders Conference successfully organised by IncoNet EaP took place in Yerevan on 15-16 May 2014. It was hosted by the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (NAS RA). The focus of the Conference was on the EU-EaP STI cooperation in addressing the Societal Challenge of Climate Change. The main goal of the Conference was to formulate recommendations on the enhancement of the EU-EaP STI cooperation in addressing Climate issues which could be integrated in the current and forthcoming agendas and funding instruments by the relevant STI actors involved in cooperation.

Active participation of the trainees were promoted by organising group activities.

Innovating Innovation Systems – Workshop
The aim of the Closing Workshop for EECA NCPs on 14 May 2012 was to offer room for discussion on innovation and internationalization of Research, Technology and Innovation. Horizon 2020 will put a strong emphasis on innovation and internationalization, especially in the priority of societal challenges, but until now we don’t have many details about its implementation. The promise of Horizon 2020 is to fund projects until the proof of concept (prototype, demonstrations, testing) and to grasp innovation beyond its pure technological meaning.
