    Training for National Contact Points (NCPs) in Belarus: Horizon 2020 – Partner Search Tools

    On 10 June 2023 a training for Horizon 2020 National Contact Points (NCPs) will take place in Minsk. The event will focus partner search with the help of most widely used electronic tools for this purpose - CORDIS, EEN and Idealist. The training is organised by the 'Belarusian Institute of System Analysis and Information Support for Scientific and Technical Sphere' (BelISA) and the Business Cooperation Centre of the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN Belarus) and supported by the EU funded IncoNet EaP project.

    Belarus and EU enter Structured Dialogue on Research and Innovation

    On 6-7 April 2016, Brussels hosted the first meeting of the Belarus-EU Coordination Group, a new format to advance a structural and comprehensive dialogue between Belarus and the European Union on trade, energy, customs, innovation and standardisation issues, as well as to boost cooperation in modernisation, technical assistance and human rights. Belarus was represented by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alena Kupchyna. The EU delegation was led by the Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service, Helga Schmid.

    Belarus and Hungary agree to launch Joint Research and Innovation Mobility Call in 2017

    The first meeting of the Hungarian-Belorussian Science, Technology & Innovation Joint Working Group (STI JWG) was held on 19 April 2016. The parties agreed upon announcing a joint call for proposals in 2017 both in Hungary and Belarus in the specific domains of energy research, renewable energies; agricultural sciences, food industry; medicine and medical technologies, bio-technologies and pharmacy; chemical technologies, nano- and new materials.

    Belarus: Awareness raising campaign on the network of Horizon 2020 National Contact Points

    The network of National Contact Points (NCPs) is the main structure to provide guidance, practical information and assistance on all aspects of participation in Horizon 2020. NCPs are also established in many non-EU countries. An awareness raising and promotion campaign on the national network of NCPs in Belarus was launched in Minsk this month with the support of the IncoNet EaP project. Among other activities, the campaign includes a training for NCPs to be held in Minsk in June and travel grants for participation in the NCP-related events organised by the European Commission and NCP thematic networks in May – July 2016.

    Academy Robert Bosch Fellowships at Chatham House

    Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs (UK), in partnership with the Robert Bosch Stiftung (Germany), hosts fellows from the 6 countries of the Eastern Partnership and Russia.The fellowship offers an opportunity for the next generation of scholars from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine to advance their knowledge of post-Soviet politics, develop research skills, contribute to Chatham House research, and build links with policy and academic communities in the UK, Germany and the EU more broadly.The fellows spend nine months working at Chatham House with the Russia and Eurasia Programme team.

    Belarus and Georgia agree to cooperate in Science and Technology

    An intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in science and technology between Belarus and Georgia was signed on 22 March 2024 during the visit of Georgia's Prime Minister Mr. George Kvirikashvili to Minsk. In contrast to similar framework agreements signed by Belarus earlier, the one with Georgia does not contain the direct obligation of the parties to provide the financial support for joint activities, e.g. for implementing the joint R&D projects. It states however that the parties will develop a mechanism to ensure the implementation of joint of S&T projects.

    Sumforest Call for 'Sustainable Forests for the Society of the Future'

    The FP7 funded ERA-NET Sumforest has launched a call for transnational collaborative research projects. It focuses on basic and applied research to inform policy decisions and also addresses research issues spanning the whole value chain from forest management to product and service development. Proposals are expected to be transnational, and innovative forms of cooperation are encouraged. Belarus and Russia are involved as funding partners, thus the call is open to participation from Belarus and Russia. Consortia may also include partners from other non-EU countries, but they will have to cover their own expenses.

    Grant Scheme to facilitate the participation of EaP countries in Brokerage Events

    This grant scheme financially supports the participation of local researchers from Eastern Partnership countries in brokerage events related to Horizon2020 in the EU Member States or Associated Countries. The thematic priorities of the call are the three Societal Challenges targeted by the projects, namely 'Health', 'Energy' and 'Climate Change'. Maximun funding per grant is 3000 EUR.

    IncoNet EaP analytical findings presented at the INNOVER-EAST training on STI EU-EaP cooperation in Energy

    The third INNOVER-EAST training on EU-Eastern Partnership Cooperation in 'Energy' was held in Minsk on 29 February 2016. Its main goal was to improve knowledge and skills of EaP partners in participating in the EU's research and innovation programmes.     The IncoNet EaP project has today announced an extension for its targeted call 'Grants & Coaching of EU-EaP Twinning Teams' , which will now will close on 22 January 2016. EU-Eastern Partnership teams active in the fields of 1. Climate Change, 1. Health or 3. Energy will be supported in preparing proposals for the Horizon 2020 calls of the Work Programme 2016-2017.     An International Conference titled 'Better Policies for More Innovation: Assessment – Implementation – Monitoring' was held in Minsk on 17–18 November 2015 by the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic Belarus and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.     'Horizon 2020 Week' in Belarus

    The 'Horizon 2020 Week – 2015' was held in Minsk on 21-25 September 2015. It presented opportunities for Belarusian research organisations and businesses to participate in the Horizon 2020 calls for proposals 2016-2107. For Belarus, the start of Horizon 2020 has been quite promising: upon the results of the first year, 11 projects with national participants have already brought around 1,5 mln EUR. However, having almost 20 thousand researchers, Belarus has a much higher capacity.

    Energy tour in Belarus to foster Green Economy

    The main organisers of this event were the project 'Supporting the Transition to a Green Economy in the Republic of Belarus', funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, and the NGO 'Center of Ecological Solutions'. Events of the Energy Tour were held on July, 15 in Starobin (Minsk region), and on July, 16 in Zhitkovichi city (Gomel region). A seminar and festival on green economy and energy efficiency subjects were the main features of the tour.

    'Environmental Policy Toolkit for Greening SMEs in EaP Countries' published

    The objective of the 'Environmental Policy Toolkit for SME Greening' – published in the frame of the OECD's EaP GREEN programme – is to help governments in the European Union’s Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine) to design and implement key instruments to promote environmental compliance and green business practices among SMEs using the existing good practices in EU and other OECD countries. The Toolkit covers three categories of environmental policy instruments: regulatory simplification and incentives, informationbased tools, as well as financial and economic incentives.

    Belarus: Research priorities for 2016–2020 approved

    The list of research priorities for Beralus in the years 2016–2020 has been approved by the Resolution of the Council of Ministers. There is one importante change in comparison the S&T priorities for 2011–2015: Almost all the priorities have been formulated more vaguely, e.g. 'Medicine and Pharmacy' instead of 'Medical, Diagnostic, Preventive and Rehabilitative Technologies, Cellular and Molecular Biology Technologies in Medicine, Apparatus and Instruments for Medical Purposes'. Moreover, in the previous budgetary cycle, each priority was further divided in 6-16 sub-priorities, while now, it seems, almost every sub-topic can be supported.

One of the projects' tasks is to collaborate with EU Innovation Platforms.     Belarus’ scientist awarded by International Society of Electrochemistry

    An award of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) was presented to young Belarusian scientist Alexander Bondarenko, graduate of the chemical faculty of the Belarusian State University, for his research in the field of electrocatalysis and new methods of interface characterisation.     First Belarusian satellite launched

    The first Belarusian space vehicle was launched into orbit from the space launch facility Baikonur, Kazakhstan at 09:41 Minsk time on 22 July. Later on, as Vladimir Yushkevich, head of the satellite flight control center informed, it has been put into its intended orbit of 500-520km.

    On 9-13 July 2012 three international events were held in Minsk by the UN Economic Commission for Europe organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and State Committee for Science and Technology of Belarus.     The Decree of President of Belarus of 11.08.2023 № 367 "On improving the promotion of young researchers’ creative work " has established 100 scholarships of the President of the Republic of Belarus for talented young researchers, who work in organizations that perform research and development in the field of natural, engineering, social sciences and humanities.     On 30 December 2011, the Government of Belarus approved a plan of national exhibitions (expositions) abroad for 2012.     Belarus and Italy have signed an inter-governmental agreement on cooperation in science and technology.     Scientists at the Scientific and Practical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus have for the first time grown a synthetic emerald of red colour, according to the Head of the Physics of High Conductivity Materials Laboratory, Vladimir Merkulov. In nature this gem is very rare, being only mined in the USA. According to experts natural emeralds will vanish sooner than - for instance - crude oil.

    Belarus: new head of Belarus Academy of Sciences and new Minister of Education appointed

    On 29 December 2023 Prof. Anatoly Rusetsky was appointed a Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The previous leader of the NAS, Mikhail Myasnikovich has been appointed the Prime-Minister of Belarus. On the same day Prof. Sergey Maskevich was appointed the Minister of Education of the Republic of Belarus. He has replaced Prof. Alexander Radkov who was appointed the Deputy Head of the President’s Administration.

    Upcoming project to research rehabilitation of radioactive contaminated soils

    The Chernobyl accident in 1986resulted in the radioactive contamination of a considerable amount of agricultural lands in Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and some European countries. An upcoming project aims at preparing and producing a pilot lot of amendments on the basis of natural raw material and industrial waste to carry out field experiments on the rehabilitation of radioactive contaminated soils in Belarus with use of the given sorbents. The realization of this project is meant to create a scientific basis for remediation of contaminated soils and economic revival of contaminated territories.

    According to 2008 edition of WIPO World patent report, Belarus has improved positions in world rankings in which inventors’ activity corresponds to GDP and expenditures for R&D.; Among 69 countries of the world Belarus occupies 4 place (63,91 applications) in number of nationals’ patent applications to 1 bln USD of GDP (13 in 2005, 15,36 applications). It became the world leader in number of residents’ patent applications to 1 mln R&D; expenditures (12,34 applications).

    State programme for scientific support for Belarus' nuclear power engineering development needs Br9bn in 2009-2010

    In 2009-2010 around Br9 billion will be required to implement the state programme for scientific support for the development of nuclear power engineering in the Republic of Belarus, Vyacheslav Kuvshinov, Director General of the United Energy and Nuclear Research Institute Sosny, told a session of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on July 17 during the presentation of a concept of the programme.

    Belarusian–Venezuelan Centre for S&T; Cooperation was opened

    The Office of the Joint Belarusian – Venezuelan Centre for S&T; Cooperation was opened in the National Experimental University named after S. Rodriges, Caracas, Venezuela in June 2008. Belarusian Office of the Centre which is hosted by the National Technical University in Minsk carries out its activities since 9 April, 2008. The Centre assists universities, R&D; organizations, innovative and industrial companies of the two countries in developing contacts in scientific, innovation and education areas, and also in creating effective mechanisms of cooperation between the two parties within the realization of joint S&T; projects.
