On 17 March 2014, the Republic of Moldova hosted the regional event to launch the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation 'Horizon 2020'. The event, which was held on the premises of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, was attended by around 30 representatives of the scientific and educational communities of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Ukraine and over 150 participants from Moldova.In this context, in order to foster the Moldova-EU dialogue in the field of Research & Innovation, Mr. Robert-Jan Smits Director General of the European Commission Directorate for Research and Innovation, and other representatives as: Dr. Martin Penny (DG Research and Innovation), Ms. Gabriela Chira (Research Executive Agency), Mr. Jeremy Bray (DG Health) and Mr. Morten Moller (DG CNET) made a working visit to Moldova.
The president of the National Association Committee on Horizon 2020, Academician Gheorghe Duca, expressed its deepest gratitude to the European Commission, in particular DG Research and Innovation, which supported the initiative to organise this dialogue in Chisinau, thus encouraging the Eastern Partnership enhancement.
Communications that reflect the objectives of Moldova regarding the European Research Area were presented in the plenary, including opportunities offered by Horizon 2020, results of the Eastern Partnership countries (EaP) in the 7th Framework Programme and the relevance of the Horizon 2020 priorities for EaP countries. Parallel sessions were focused on the following areas: health; information and communication technologies; and the Marie Sklodowska Curie actions.
In the context of this event, European officials together with representatives of ASM attended a series of meetings with the responsible authorities of the Republic of Moldova to discuss the association of Moldova to Horizon 2020. These high level meetings included talks with Mr. Nicolai Timofti, President of the Republic of Moldova; Ms. Maia Sandu, Minister of Education; and Mr. Iulian Groza, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.
