    FP9 – EU Commission sketches out the route to its next Framework Programme (2021-2028)

    At a Science|Business meeting in Brussels on 12 October, Robert Jan-Smits, Director-General for Research at the European Commission, said that the groundwork for the 2021- 2028 EU research programme is already being laid, with a foresight study in hand, plans to develop new models of how R&D contributes to the economy, and a public consultation due to open next month. FP9 issues being chewed over at the moment include: more capacity building research money for Central and Eastern European countries; and ways to bump up international participation.

    Tbilisi State University and Forschungszentrum Jülich open SMART|EDM_Lab

    On 21 September 2016,  the Georgian Science Minister Alexander Jejelava and Prof. Sebastian Schmidt, board member of Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany, opened the SMART|EDM_Lab at Tbilisi State University. SMART stands for 'Science, Medicine, Applied Research and Technology' and EDM is short for 'electric dipole moment'. The concept of these laboratories is to offer young Georgian scientists who received training at Forschungszentrum Jülich an attractive return option to their homeland. The Georgian Ministry of Education and Science funds the SMART|Labs, while equipment and know-how are delivered by FZ Jülich.

    Samarkand Conference 2016

    The conference entitled 'Regional and International Cooperation in Central Asia and South Caucasus: Recent Developments in Agricultural Trade' will be held from 2 to 4 November 2016 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Agricultural trade in the Caucasus and Central Asian countries is highly dependent on regional markets, and particularly on Russia. However, substantial changes have occurred in trade policies of the CCA countries during the last 2-3 years. The conference provides an opportunity for knowledge exchange to researchers, as well as policy makers from the Caucasus and Central Asia. Researchers from Europe and other countries are also invited.

    5th Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region

    The 5th Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region will be jointly organised by the European Commission and the Slovak Republic on 3 and 4 November 2016 on the premises of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava. The forum entitled 'Innovative Flows - Water, Knowledge and Innovation in the Danube Region' will focus on water management and research and innovation in the Danube region. The participants will have the opportunity to discuss the results and future of the strategy.

    This grant scheme financially supports the participation of local researchers from Eastern Partnership countries in brokerage events related to Horizon2020 in the EU Members States or Associated Countries. The thematic priorities of the call are the three Societal Challenges targeted by the projects, namely 'Health', 'Energy' and 'Climate Change'. Maximum funding per grant is 1,500 EUR.

    The project aims to stimulate aviation research collaboration between the European Union and Ukraine (UA) through strategic and targeted support. AERO-UA focuses solely on Ukraine due to the country’s huge aerospace potential and comparatively low level of aviation research collaboration with the EU. Ukrainian aerospace organisations possess unique skills and knowledge that can help Europe to address the challenges and goals identified in the ACARE Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, Flightpath 2050 report, the Clean Sky 2 initiative and H2020 Transport.
